It is one of the oldest historic buildings in Little Walsingham and dates back to 1310. The northern end of the building was built to accommodate King Edward III on his numerous pilgrimages to Walsingham. From the 17 century The Black Lion was a coaching Inn, the oak panelled room to the right of the building hosted the petty sessions until 1861 when they were moved to the Shire Hall.
