The estuary is a popular spot for water sports including wind surfing, jet boating, kayaking, etc. Sumner Village boasts many Restaurants, Cafes and Bars. The Christchurch Gondola, the new Maori Village, and Ferrymead Historic Park are about 5 minutes by car. Moa Cave Guest House and Motel is at the base of the Port hills, which boasts some great walks, with incredible scenery. The walk along the top of the cliff from Sumner to Scarborough, then to Taylors Mistake is a must. A more relaxed option is to walk along the Esplanade. There are Cafes at each end. You will have great views of the sea, and Sumner"s surfing beach all the way. Only 15 minute by car to the central city, and 25 minutes to Christchurch International Airport.
