Area Attractions - RILSKI MONASTERY Rilski monastery, St. Ivan Rilski, is one of the most impressive monuments of Bulgarian architecture and art. It is the oldest inhabited cloister in our country. It was also the biggest literary center in Bulgaria during the Ottoman occupation. The monastery was founded in the 10th century by the Bulgarian hermit Ivan Rilski. At its present location, the monastery was erected in 14th century as at the beginning only one defence tower was built. The succeeding most important part of the building of the monastery was the period 1816-1870 when, with funds collected from the whole nation and the hard work of many master-builders, wood-cutters, icon-painters, sculptors and artists, the biggest Bulgarian monastery was built. It has been declared as an international monument by UNESCO. The monastery is located in Rila Mountain, 120 km south-west from Sofia, and 4 km from the town of Rila................................53 km BANSKO The Holy Trinity Compound Temple presents one of the greatest historic and cultural landmarks of the town of Bansko. The church was built in 1835 by local masters on the initiative of the influential merchant, Lazar German. The building is a three-nave pseudo-basilica and is one of the biggest in the country. The iconostasis and the painting on the columns are the work of Usta Velian Ognev and the icons are painted by the renowned masters from Bansko Iconographic School - Dimitar and Simeon Mollerov. In close proximity to the church is erected a 30 meters high clock bell tower. The two faced clock on the bell tower, which measures the exact time for 150 years now, is made by the self- taught master from Bansko Todor Hadjiradonov. The four church bells are the work of the local eminent moulders Velliganov brothers. It was in the Holy Trinity church where in 1912 the independence of Bansko was proclaimed..............................40 km MELNIK In the south-western flanks of Pirin Mountain is situated the smallest town in Bulgaria Melnik. The town is declared as an architectural-historical reserve and museum town. It is located 24 kilometers south-east of Sandanski. Melnik is a combination of incredibly beautiful nature and incomparable architecture. Its history is rich with legends and stories of different cultures. The lovely white houses, that are built one above other on the hills and surrounded by rocks have quiet yards and white bay-windows, arouse much admiration. Today the town has 230 inhabitants. Interesting are the ruins from different epochs and nations, which have inhabited the town when it was culturally and economically prosperous. In the sand pyramids which girdle it are hollowed out cellars in which the famous Melnik wine matures, ages and is preserved becoming mellow, full-bodied and heavy. Among the most famous houses are Kordopoulova the biggest preserved revival house, and Bolyarska the oldest one in Bulgaria.....................................64 km ROZHEN MONASTERY Rojenski monastery, *The Birth of the Virgin Mary*, is situated south of the village of Rojen, some kilometers away from the picturesque town of Melnik. The monastery complex includes the main church, living buildings, shady verandah and fortified walls, combined in a beautiful architectural ensemble. The church is decorated with frescoes, candlesticks, crosses, and beautiful fretworks on the iconostasis. Some of the icons are exceptionally precious monuments of our fine arts. Of great interest are the scenes painted on the outer facade, and its white belfry. According to historians, the monastery was founded during the time of Alexi Slav - a Bulgarian boyar who ruled the Rhodopean territory during the 12-13th century. Today the monastery is restored, and open for visits. Yane Sandanski - one of the biggest Bulgarian revolutionaries - spent his last days in this monastery. Today his grave is under the church of St. Kiril and Metodii, not far from the Rojenski monastery..............................70 km RUPITE An interesting excursion can be made to the Place of Rupite, which is situated about 20 kilometers south from the town of Sandanski near the Struma River. It is located on an extinct volcano crater, and its relief is formed by the volcano hill Kojuh and the hill of Pchelina. Тhe place is famous for its thermal springs, which are curative and are visited by many tourists. There are a wide variety of plants in the region some of them listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria. It is this place where is situated the village of Rupite. Here are located the house and grave of the famous Bulgarian prophet Baba Vanga. She said that Rupite is filled with specific cosmic energy. On her insistence, in 1992 the temple of St. Petka was built in the village, and at once turned into a place for pilgrimage of thousands of people needing healing. The icons on the iconostasis are painted by Professor Svetlin Rusev........................................60 km
