Historical Revolution Walking Tour

The Historical Revolution Walk Tour focuses on the uprising events and areas of 200 years of Hungarian history. Experience the build up, follow the marches, re-live the battles and remember the stories! You start your tour in Deak Square with a short history overview of how, why and what exactly took place to make the Hungarians take up arms against during the war of independance in 1848, the 1956 revolution and 1989 fall of the Iron Curtain. After this you visit the main areas for the significance of their locations and learn about their meanings.

Your first stop will be Szabadsag Square that became famous during the Habsburg era and is home to the Soviet Memorial. Here is where the World War II liberation of Hungary took place  and where you will learn about Cardinal Mindszenty's part in the 1956 revolution and see the U.S. Embassy. You will visit the Batthyany Eternal Flame for the 1956 revolution remembering those who fought and lost their lives.You will also hear the story of the 13 admirals and Hungary's first Prime Minister Batthyany.

Your next stop will be the Parliament area where in the 1956 Revolution the shots were fired, which began the revolt to take up arms. Visit the Imre Nagy memorial, the remembrance of the man who defied the leaders in Moscow and paid dearly on the gallows two years later in total secrecy through a court and sentencing.

Take the tram to Elizabeth bridge where you will visit Marcius 15 Square, a World War II and 1956 revolution heritage site where you walk through the Liberty monuments. Then you take a short walk through old Pest passing by Karolyi garden to the Nemzeti Museum where you will hear stories of 1849 as well as abouth the legend of the poet Petofi and his passionate recitement of his famous poem that became the National song of Hungary giving way to raise the war of independance.

Enjoy a stroll through the 7th district of Gozdu Udvar, take a walk through the former Jewish Ghetto and learn about the World War II Nazi occupation. Your next stop will lead you to a private exhibition at a fully furnished flat with real relicts highlighting the way people lived in communist times. You will further hear stories about what it was like to be a child and a pioneer in this era.
